Abstract

Palm Sugar (Arenga pinnata Merr) was a plant including forestry and non-timber forest products with huge potential to overcome food shortages. As the crop potential, it is necessary information about the plant, including DNA analysis. This study aims to determine the genetic diversity of natural populations of sugar palm trees in South Tapanuli by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA markers (RAPD). A total of 24 acessions palm sugar the populations originated from various regions in Tapanuli Selatan, consists of Angkola Barat, Angkola Selatan, Batangtoru and Sipirok. In this experiment the analisys diversity among palm sugar were investigated using RAPD marker. Results of the investigations indicated the means polymorphic 31.57 % was while mean of Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) of the RAPD marker analyzed was 85 %. Results of genetic dissimilarity coefficient calculation and dendogram construction using DARwin 5.05 indicated that 24 acessions palm sugar  populations was clustered into five groups. Part of Angkola Barat origin acessions spreaded into group II-IV; that of Sipirok acessions origin spreaded into group II-V; Angkola Selatan acessions origin spreaded into group I, III and V; and Batangtoru acessions origin spreaded into Group II,III and V. This shows that the four sites studied had a high genetic diversity. The acessions 11 of Angkola Selatan allegedly have specific material alone because cluster only
